Dowsett Update - July/August 2007

July - August 2007

Central India. The Gospel first reached People Group “L” less than 20 years ago. A significant number in many of the villages have put their faith in Jesus. They face stiff opposition from their own communities. Pray that God will work through published Scripture portions to bring this new church to spiritual maturity, for church leaders to be raised up from among them, for effective literacy work so that all may understand the Gospel, and for the training of the primarily oral people to put the translated Scriptures into their traditional story-songs.

Guinea Bissau, Africa. The translators from a group of languages called Group “C” will begin translation training at a workshop scheduled for August. Pray for wisdom and skill in communication for the instructors, for health and good comprehension for the participants and for smooth logistics.

USA. The Chaldean language is very close to one Jesus spoke while here on earth. The New Testament was recently translated under the auspices of Aramaic Bible Translation, Inc. The translation work was done in the context of a large immigrant community of Chaldean speakers in the USA. This organization is also supporting the translation of the Bible into four other related languages. Praise God for the dedicated team who have committed themselves to this task. Pray for wide distribution and effective use of the Chaldean New Testament in the homeland and in immigrant communities around the world.

West Asia. The development of a dictionary is an essential step in preparing for opportunities for a previously unwritten language to be used in written form. Dictionary development brings recognition to the language and culture and helps prepare the way for translated Scriptures to be read and used. A team in a very sensitive area is grateful for some local women who are interested in helping test drafted dictionary entries for accuracy. Pray for more speakers of this language to join the team so the work can go ahead more quickly and the way prepared for Bible translation to begin.

Philippines. Praise God that a team of more than eight people has completed the revision of New Testament plus Genesis in the Kagayanen language. Pray for Spirit-led decisions as they work together on pictures, the cover, maps, the title page, finalization of the glossary, writing the preface, and perform spelling and consistency checks* in preparation for typesetting. Pray for team members as they bring this project to completion; and for the Kagayanen people as they receive God's Word.

*Because a translation of even the New Testament takes several years and a variety of workers creating or editing the draft, before publication can be approved, the translation team must check for consistency in many matters, from spelling of words and Biblical names to the use of the same phraseology for each key theological term to a check against the same event described in the other gospels.
