You Can't Have It All

Posted on Feb 5, 2006 Print this article - Email this article

God to You and Me:
“You Can’t Have It All.  Sorry.”

Proverbs 6:1-11, 22:7

I Timothy 6:6-11, 17-19

------------------------------------------------

Two Facts We Must Face

nWe are responsible to God for 100%, not 10%.

nNo one can have everything, so get busy choosing.

------------------------------------------------

Even the super-rich can’t have it all

                                                MILLIONS

 1 Bill Gates                              51,000             Microsoft

2 Warren Buffett                      40,000             Berkshire Hathaway

3 Paul Gardner Allen                22,500             Microsoft

 4 Michael Dell                          18,000             Dell

 5 Larry Ellison                          17,000             Oracle

 6 Christy Walton                      15,700             Wal-Mart

 7 Jim C Walton                        15,700             Wal-Mart

 8 S Robson Walton                  15,600             Wal-Mart

 9 Alice L Walton                      15,500             Wal-Mart

10 Helen R Walton                    15,400             Wal-Mart

------------------------------------------------

Even the super-rich can’t have it all

n2005 FEDERAL BUDGET: 2,479 Billion Dollars

nOur national government spends Bill Gates’ entire net worth, approximately once every week.

nThe Big Question:  can the U.S. Government have it all?  NO.

------------------------------------------------

We are responsible to God for 100%, not 10%.

nWhy?  GOD OWNS IT ALL

n“The silver is mine and the gold is mine,” says the Lord Almighty.  Haggai 2:10

nWe are stewards, and “it is required of a steward that he be found faithful.”  I Corinthians 4:2

------------------------------------------------

We are responsible to God for 100%, not 10%.

nWe’re responsible to give, as the last three weeks have shown us.

nSo what are we to do with the money we DON’T give?

nPay taxes

nSave

nBuy what we need/want with a glad heart

------------------------------------------------

MAJOR FAILURE POINT

nBuying what we want NOW, with money we don’t HAVE now…DEBT

nAmerican Bankers Association the average family currently has $8,000.00 credit card debt.

nProverbs 22:7:    The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

nOut of control debt produces fear, anxiety, depression, anger, and sorrow

nSEE PROVERBS 6:1-5

------------------------------------------------

What then are you to do with your money?

nPay debts (if you have them)

nGive

nPay taxes

nSave

nBuy what we need/want with a glad heart

HOW DO I DO ALL THAT????

------------------------------------------------

What’s a budget?

A budget is a plan in which you tell your money where to go, instead of wondering where it went.  John Maxwell

------------------------------------------------

Budgeting

PRIORITY:

nDebt

nGiving

nTaxes

NEEDS:

nFood & Basic necessities

nShelter (rent or mortgage + utilities)

nClothing

nTransportation (Bicycle? Bus Pass? Car?)

Second Level Needs

nChildren

nMedical

nInsurance: health, life

nCar or second car; gas, insurance, upkeep

nSAVING

nMiscellaneous

Wants

nEntertainment

n Recreation

nPurchase “stuff I want”

------------------------------------------------

Closing Thoughts from I Timothy

1 Tim 6:6-8

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

I Tim 6:17-19

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth… Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share… In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
