Recent Sermon Notes The Bare Facts for October 17 Our GOOD to GREAT series continued this week with a fifth message called A CULTURE OF DISCIPLINE. After we find and/or develop disciplined people and begin to apply disciplined thought in our church, greatness demands the formation of a culture of disciplined action. Every pastor and small business owner and school principal and manager in America understands this from the gut…if you have people whom you can simply “turn loose” and count on to do a great job, you have already won the battle. A culture of discipline means serving God within the framework of our church, while exercising both freedom and responsibility. People who do this don’t need tons of rules and regulations to “keep them in line.” No, such disciples are kept pure in heart by the Spirit of Christ, and are moved by God to do what needs to be done—leading Dayspring from good to great. Let me be clear. I can turn a building maintenance problem at Dayspring over to Charlie Autry, our deacon chairman, knowing that our deacons will do a good job. When Barbara Bennett was leading our children’s ministry I knew that every possible thing she could think of to improve our children’s ministry was being done, even while she battled illness much of the time. Our worship is flourishing because Mike McCrae pours himself into it—and asks his worship team to demonstrate a culture of discipline in music ministry. If Bob Murray or Linwood Tew is present on Sunday morning I have no worries as to whether our guests will be warmly welcomed. Quality in church bookkeeping is unquestioned because Barbara Bare is on the job. Alan Colborn sets a standard of excellence in the church’s technology needs (audio, video, power point slides) Sunday after Sunday. Bill Andrews doesn’t merely “lead a hymn”—he educates, inspires, and shows us why the hymn we are singing is relevant to our life today. I could go on, and on, and on…what a blessing to pastor a church like Dayspring Fellowship!! So many of you are living out a culture of discipline! You see Dayspring is already blessed with many people who are in the “right seat” on the bus. Good to Great requires that we get more people in the right seats, that we face the brutal facts, that we identify our Hedgehog concept, and that more and more we minister out of a culture of discipline.
