Leviticus 27:30-33 Matthew 23:23-24 --------------------------------------------------- Ps 50:9-12 -- God owns it all 9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. --------------------------------------------------- Leviticus 27:30-32 30 "'A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD…32 The entire tithe of the herd and flock--every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd's rod--will be holy to the LORD. --------------------------------------------------- Numbers 18:21-24 I give to the Levites all the tithes in --------------------------------------------------- Numbers 18:25-29 The LORD said to Moses, 26 "Speak to the Levites and say…'When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the LORD's offering... 28 In this way you also will present an offering to the LORD from all the tithes you receive… From these tithes you must give the LORD's portion to Aaron the priest…present as the LORD's portion the best and holiest part of everything given to you.’” --------------------------------------------------- Deuteronomy 14:22-23 22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. --------------------------------------------------- Deuteronomy 14:28-29 28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you… --------------------------------------------------- Tithes can be confusing nA tithe is for the Levites and priests nA tithe is to be eaten at the Tabernacle, yearly, by a family group (a festival to the LORD) nA tithe every third year is to be kept locally, for the Levites and the poor nIs it one, two, or three tithes ?? n10, 20, or 23 percent? --------------------------------------------------- The effects of the Tithe nREJOICING IN GOD There…you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice…because the LORD your God has blessed you. nHONORING GOD …so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. nEXPERIENCING GOD’S FAVOR …so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. --------------------------------------------------- Important Principles about Tithing nGod owns it all. nGod reserved for Himself at least 1/10th of nThe Lord’s portion was the first and best. nOld Testament tithes are based on Law. nWe are not under the Law, but grace. nTithing as a Law does not apply to us! nQuestion: How does it apply? --------------------------------------------------- Matthew 23:23-24 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices-mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.” --------------------------------------------------- Tithing is a guideline for giving nWhen Christians speak of “TITHING” we must be very careful about what we say! nWe are not trying to keep the O.T. law; we seek to be transformed by the Spirit. nTithing was the basic minimum requirement of the Old Testament Law. nBut under Grace, tithing is a spiritual guideline, a beginning point, not an end. --------------------------------------------------- TRUTHS TO TAKE AWAY! nGod owns it all, but He has chosen to put in your hands some of His wealth for your use. nGod does not need anything we give; but He knows that we need to give. n Giving will never make God love you more; instead, giving is our way to demonstrate that we love and trust our God. nWhen we give faithfully, a window is opened for God to increase peace and abundance for the giver.
